White Ink or Encre Blanche is a homage to feminist writer Hélène Cixous who heavily influenced this project. For her, feminine writing is symbolised by the milk that all women possess, every woman being a potential creator of life. For her, this milk, or white ink is the voice that each woman has within her, and that she must express through her actions. In this image, my hands hold my own vase symbol of white ink. This central work is meant to anchor the project and to give it a centre of gravity as a self looping exercise. Like the planets in ‘precession’, the image of the woman and crucially the mirror-image of ourselves is in constant evolution. Pottery is ultimately fragile but at the same time resilient and mobile. It is a carrier of water, and has always been a social object, one of exchange. It spans cultures and eras. In the same way images are constantly reinterpreted according to the contemporary context and positioning. Facts are grasped in the contemporaneity of their models. Their meaning, their goal and their utility are perpetually changing. This work looks to the future by looking to the past.
